Mahatma Education Society’s Pillai College of Education and Research, Chembur in collaboration with Soroptimist Welfare Association organized an Expert Talk on International Day of Women and Girls in Science titled, “My Life – My Science : Challenges faced by Women in Science”. The resource person for the day was Dr. Shobhona Sharma Senior Professor (Retd) Tata Institute of Fundamental research. This talk was held on 11th February, 2023. Ms. Anupa student of F.Y. B.Ed. hosted this event. This event was aligned to SDG 5: Gender Equality.
The program began with the introduction of the guest speaker by Ms. Achala Bhor ma’am. She highlighted the achievements and contributions of Dr. Shobhona Sharma in science. After the introduction, Dr. Shobhona Sharma began her talk in which she divided the topic into three phases of her life. Dr. Shobhona spoke about her life, and the challenges faced by her as a student and then continued talking about some of her research works in the field of science. She discussed her research work on malarial parasites and also provided an in- depth information about the vaccines to treat malaria. Ms. Shobhana Sharma enlightened us on how she and her team worked day and night to prepare this vaccine. Dr. Sharma presented data of women and girls in the field of science and how it has improved over the years. She also gave some tips on how girls should overcome the challenges and should not keep a barrier and restrict themselves. After her talk, Principal Dr. Reni Francis then shared her thoughts on the importance of commemorating International Day of Women and Girl’s in Science in order to create awareness among student teachers and teachers about equal access to and participation for women and girls, to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. The program ended with the vote of thanks given by Ms. Anupa. It was truly an enriching session.
